Hermitude

Hermitude are an award-winning electronic production duo hailing from Sydney. Over the past 12 months their profile has exploded off the back of their Australian Music Prize-winning album HyperParadise. Hermitude have fast become one of Australia’s most in-demand touring acts and are set to make further inroads internationally in 2013.

The offspring of professional musicians, Luke Dubs and Elgusto formed Hermitude in 2001 but they’d already performed together in jazz and funk bands for years. Hermitude’s first EP was the vinyl-only Imaginary Friends out through Elefant Traks. They followed this up with their debut album in 2003—the critically adored Alleys to Valleys.

The Cuban-influenced rhythms of their second album Tales of the Drift followed in 2005 and blended elegantly with the jazz influenced electronic and hip hop sound they'd been developing. Local touring picked up and they toured West Coast USA with Aceyalone and Japan with DJ Krush and Kentaro.

2007 saw their Rare Sightings EP drop before third album Threads in 2008. Although never strictly instrumental hip hop, Hermitude's sound was clearly moving in a more electronic direction and despite the style not yet being on trend, they sold out shows and enjoyed an international following.

In September 2011 things started changing. Bigtime. Hermitude released the summery monster single ‘Speak of the Devil’, landing it in the triple j Hottest 100 and winning the triple j Award for Best Video. Hermitude’s fourth album HyperParadise followed Feb 2012 and charted in the Australian Top 40. The accompanying tour quickly sold-out but that was nothing compared to what was coming. First were the national festival slots where they moved from the chillout side-stages to the electronic and dance stages. Within 6 months they'd move from the dance stage to the main stages.

Their momentum landed them a global publishing deal with Sony/ATV and ‘Speak of The Devil’ was licensed by Regal Recordings/Parlophone (EMI) in the UK and on Astralwerks in the US. The song enjoyed regular spins on BBC Radio 1 and across European radio.

The duo released the Parallel Paradise Remix EP which featured the Flume’s remix of HyperParadise. The tune went number 1 on Hype Machine, thundering its way across the world and on track to going double platinum in Australia.

There were AIR Awards for Best Electronic Album, ARIA nominations for Best Dance Release, and of course the winner of the prestigious Australian Music Prize. Hermitude are now a bankable mainstage festival drawcard in Australia and New Zealand with shows in NYC, London and Berlin in the last 6 months.

New single Ukiyo (a non-single released in April 2014 without a video or campaign) raced to 200k plays on soundcloud in under 5 days, making the Hype Machine top 10.
